Chapter Thirteen

Veda polished off the last bite of garlic bread with a large gulp of whiskey. She was at the perfect level with her intoxication. She was drunk enough to enjoy a buzz, but not so drunk that she would say something stupid. Anyhow, the time to say stupid stuff had gone. They had spent the last one hour talking about Shaan, and Veda was all out of tears and heavy topics. She couldn’t remember the last time she had felt so exhausted, and yet—so carefree and light and happy. But it was time to put a stop to this. They couldn’t ruminate in the past forever.

No more of this. Veda thought determinedly. There was silence as she blew smoke rings in the air. Arjun stared as the rings slowly dissipated.

“Must you be so juvenile?” He rolled his eyes at her.

“Oh, c’mon. You’re just jealous because you can’t do it,” Veda said teasingly as she blew another smoke ring.

Then she did something very unexpected. Veda brought her hand up to his face and caressed his cheek. She just had to know how that one day stubble would feel at the back of her fingers. She saw him close his eyes at her touch, his long lashes brushing his cheeks, the tension lines that seemed permanent on his forehead creasing out. Hesitantly, Veda glided her palm to cup his chin for a moment, trailing her hand further below his neck and coming to rest just below his collarbone. She could feel the faint pulse of his heartbeat, and felt hers quicken as he opened his eyes.

Arjun, not breaking eye contact, brought his hand to her face to brush off strands of hair from her forehead, and softened his gaze. She had never seen him this way. She felt this pull, this want…

But he is his best friend!

Veda stilled for a moment, freezing in place. Arjun’s soft gaze turned to one of alarm as he felt her stiffen below him. He was just moving away when Veda decided to shut her mind off and just go with her instinct.

Veda didn’t know if it was the alcohol,
